The United Grand Lodge of England (UGLE) has granted permission for all Craft Master Masons to wear the Tercentenary Jewel, originally issued in 2017 to mark 300 years since the founding of the first Grand Lodge in London in 1717. What was once a commemorative jewel marking a unique milestone has now been recognised as a permanent emblem of unity and tradition within Freemasonry.
The Design and Symbolism
The jewel itself is a medal suspended from a blue ribbon, echoing the Craft colours of UGLE. The central feature is a globe set within a triangle, representing Freemasonry’s universality and the balance of wisdom, strength, and beauty. Surrounding this are three interlaced circles, symbolising eternity, unity, and the interconnectedness of all Masons across the world.
At its base is the square and compasses, the timeless emblem of Freemasonry, signifying morality, self-discipline, and the fraternity’s guiding principles. The jewel’s circular frame is inscribed with the dates 1717–2017, marking the tricentenary itself.
Lasting Significance
By authorising all Craft Master Masons to wear the Tercentenary Jewel, UGLE ensures that the celebration of 300 years of Freemasonry is not confined to history books but remains a living part of Masonic identity. It stands as both a commemoration of the past and a symbol of the fraternity’s ongoing relevance in the modern world.
