About us
We’re a friendly and welcoming Mark lodge that meets at Kings Heath Masonic Hall on the 1st Monday in March, the 4th Monday in September for Installation and the 1st Monday in December. One of the oldest Mark lodges in the Province, we celebrated our centenary in 2017 with great history and a number of highly distinguished Brethren as members. No more so as at the present time when we have R W Bro Frank Spencer, PDepGM and PPGM of Worcestershire and W Bro Paul Yarnell DepPGM both of whom are active and regular members of our lodge.
Our Installation meeting is in September and in December and we normally hold a fun and entertaining Black Country inspired evening which is a great alternative to the normal festive night - don’t come unless you are hungry!
We have a healthy mixture of older, more experienced Mark masons with many having held active Provincial Officer roles either currently or in the past and also a number of newer and younger brethren that creates a great balance withing the lodge.
A Brief History of Moseley Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 667
Moseley Lodge of Mark Master Masons No 667 was consecrated on September 10th 1917 by the second Provincial Grand Master of Mark masonry in Worcestershire, the Rt W Bro Lt Co Lord Athlummney.
There were 37 founding members and 10 Honorary members who included the Provincial Grand Master Lord Athlummney, Dep P G Master V W Bro Page, Prov G Chaplin, Prov Grand Secretary and other distinguished members of the Province.
Even though the country was still in the throes of World War One its membership rapidly grew attracting new members into the Mark degree from both Worcestershire and Warwickshire Lodges as well as many joining members.
The degree of expansion was such that on the meeting on 3rd November 1919 some 10 Brethren were advanced into Moseley Lodge, 7 from the Craft Lodge of the Mystic Quest No 3873 and again on 28 September 1921when 10 Brethren from Stechford Lodge No 3185 were advanced on the same evening.
New members came from throughout both Worcestershire and the adjoining Warwickshire and across the professions. However from the late 1950’s the Lodge began to see a number of Showman and Entertainers join the Lodge Bob Wilson in 1962, and Dennis Shipley in 1986.
On 7 September 1953 W Bro H E Clive OBE joined the Moseley Lodge and later became Asst PGM (1951 -1955) and then Dep PGM between 1955 and 1969 in the Craft. Before this he also held the office of Prov GDC in the Mark degree.
On 7 March 1955 a solicitor , W Bro S A Rollins was advanced into Moseley and later became Provincial 2nd Principal in the Holy Royal Arch between 1978 and 1985.
An evening of note was on 5th March 1956 when two brethren were advanced into the Lodge – W Bro B J W Chambers a manufacturer from Birmingham, a member of Northfield Lodge No 5056 and a professional tennis umpire who later became Asst PGM in the craft between 1969 and 1981 and then Dep PGM from 1981 until his death in 1986 and W Bro E E Young, a company director from Redditch and a member of Bordesley Lodge No 4495who later became Provincial 3rd Principal in the Holy Royal Arch in 1971.
On 2nd March 1964 W Bro Edward F Hanson was advanced into Moseley Lodge who later became Worcestershire Provincial Grand Master in craft between 1983 and 1992, Prov GDC in the Mark between 1972 and 1978, the Provincial Grand Superintendent in the Royal Arch between 1978 and 1983 and Inspector General in Rose Croix in 1991. He had been a regimental sergeant major in the Western Desert with the 8th Army in World War Two and later a chartered surveyor, he was elected Lord Mayor of Birmingham in 1977 and spearheaded the formal twinning of Birmingham with the French city of Lyon. For this, Lyon University bestowed on him an Honorary Doctor of Laws degree.
Other distinguished members of Moseley Lodge in more recent years include R W Bro David Rawlins who was advanced on 4 Dec 1967 and therefore just missed the 50th celebrations of the Lodge and later became the Provincial Grand Master of Warwickshire Mark between 2007 and 2012, Dep PGM in Worcestershire Mark between 1981 and 1990 and Assistant PGM and Dep PGM in Warwickshire Craft masonry between 1999 and 2008 amongst other honours, and R W Bro Francis C Spencer who was advanced 7th March 1988 who, of course, later became Prov Grand Master and then Grand DC, Assistant Grand Master and Dep Grand Master until 2025.
